It’s time to celebrate learning and on June 24, 2013, The Office of the Pima County School Superintendent is pleased to host the Fair for Education.

Communities in the U.S. with the highest standards of living can be identified in a number of ways, but one of the common threads is the cultural value that is placed on education.  The Fair for Education aims to promote the positive influence of education in our community, celebrate learning as a life-long endeavor and establish education as a ‘cultural pillar’ and central figure to the social identity of Tucson and Pima County.

The Fair for Education will be an evening to come together and find new resources for enrichment.  There will be:

    • Food truck round-up
    • Demo’s of physical activities such as salsa dancing, karate, jump rope, bike riding, BMX.  These exhibitors have been asked to include audience participation.
    • An art gallery featuring young artists, some in elementary school
    • Student jazz and other instrumental ensembles in the food court
    • Adult learning opportunities such as mini-seminars on wildlife tracking, photography, second language learning, etc
    • A display of winning science fair entries
    • Opportunities for extended education at local colleges and universities.

The Fair will feature free educational resources for teachers and “Lighthouse Projects” - exemplary projects by master teachers around Southern Arizona that integrate Common Core Standards. These are to be projects implemented by cooperative effort between higher education and public schools (or private) or between industry and schools.  They are  innovative and will serve as a model for other educators.

This year the FAIR invites the public to come and celebrate education in our community by presenting a fun, family-pleasing array of educational opportunities for every age and interest.

Phase II - Resource Alignment Training
    Who Should Attend
    : Early Childhood Educators

Description: The Common Core Standards are more rigorous than any single set of standards before them in K-12 education.  In order for students to become proficient learners of this deeper, more complex content they will need the foundational skills to problem solve, create, evaluate, communicate, collaborate, analyze and synthesize.  After years of research, Mind In the Making author Dr. Ellen Galinsky has determined that in order to navigate the challenges of learning, there are seven skills everyone needs. Dr. Galinsky refers to these foundational skills as the Seven Essential Skills: focus and self-control, perspective taking, communicating, making connections, critical thinking, taking on challenges, and self-directed learning.  The earlier we can set children on the path to mastering these skills, the greater the chance of their success in all aspects of life. These skills dictate how we live, love, learn and laugh.

This two day interactive workshop will help you to understand why your students need the Seven Essential Skills more than ever with the cognitive demand of the new standards and life’s many challenges and how to help young children acquire them.
