Audience: Upper Elementary Teachers

Today, basic survival for most of us means regular trips to the supermarket. But imagine living in the Sonoran Desert region hundreds or even thousands of years ago. Everything you needed came from right here. In this workshop, you will discover local resources that native peoples of the Sonoran Desert – Tohono O’odham, Yaqui, and Seri – have traditionally used for food, medicine, clothing, and tools of all kinds as you:

  • Become trained and eligible to borrow a Sonoran Supermarket lending kit full of artifacts, books, project materials and detailed user instructions.

  • Sample native foods and learn techniques to gather and process them

  • Experiment with natural fibers and pigments

  • Receive background reading and lesson plans

Professional Development Credit:

5 hours for March session

7 hours for April session

Fee: NONE

Teachers will receive a $50 stipend

Limited to 20 participants per session

The Desert Museum reserves the right to cancel any event due to under-enrollment – less than 10 participants
