As a Candidate for the Ajo School Board I bring my love of learning, working for and with children, and my teaching experience of forty four years in the classroom. I am asking the voters to again elect me to the school board. I have not forgotten what it is like to be a teacher and remember the frustration I experienced with school board members that seemed out of touch with the education process. I have tried to bridge that gap. I have also kept my last campaign promises to listen to anyone that had a problem, and do what I could to help solve the problem. Being on the school board has not been easy because I sometimes had to make unpopular decisions. I always based my vote on asking myself, did I have all of the information necessary to cast an intelligent and impartial vote. I also asked myself, will the outcome of my vote help or hurt the education of our children? I have never voted to gain personal ego satisfaction or popularity in our small community.

As a board member I was able to convince my fellow board members to add an additional meeting the day before our regular meeting. The purpose of that work study session was to discuss in depth the issues on the agenda. This enabled us to go home and think about the issues before we voted. Because of the open meeting law we are legally not allowed to discuss in private how we are going to vote. The public was specifically asked to attend both meetings so they could see what discussions, thoughts, and facts were presented to us. Since we live in a very small community this study session would hopefully enlighten the community members how a board operates.

 

As a board member I have gone to workshops, and conferences to obtain knowledge that would make me a better board member. I have also allowed teachers and administrators, by my vote, to attend workshops and conferences. The more knowledge and skills we all receive, the better education our students will get.
 
Como candidata a la Junta Directiva del Distrito Escolar de Ajo, aporto mi entusiasmo por aprender, trabajar para y con los niños, y mi experiencia como maestra durante más de cuarenta y cuatro años en las aulas. Les pido a los votantes que me elijan otra vez a la Junta Directiva. No he olvidado cómo es ser maestra y recuerdo la frustración que tuve con los miembros de la junta directiva que parecían lejanos del proceso de la educación. He intentado llenar ese hueco. También he cumplido las promesas que hice durante mi última campana para escuchar a toda persona que tuviera un problema, y hacer lo que pudiera para ayudar a resolver el problema. No siempre ha sido fácil estar en la junta directiva porque a veces tuve que tomar decisiones no populares. Siempre antes de votar me preguntaba si tenía suficiente información para votar de manera inteligente e imparcial. También me preguntaba, ¿el resultado de mi voto ayudará o impedirá la educación de nuestros niños? Nunca he votado para mi propia satisfacción personal o popularidad en nuestra comunidad pequeña.

 

Como miembro de la junta directiva pude convencer a los otros miembros de la junta para que tuviéramos una reunión adicional antes del día de la reunión regular. El propósito de la reunión era tener una sesión de trabajo/estudio para discutir en detalle los asuntos en el programa. Esto nos permitió irnos a casa y pensar sobre los asuntos antes de votar. Debido a la ley de reuniones abiertas, legalmente no podemos hablar en privado sobre cómo vamos a votar. Se pidió al público que asistiera a las dos reuniones para que pudieran escuchar las conversaciones, pensamientos y hechos que se nos presentaban. Puesto que vivimos en una comunidad muy pequeña, esta sesión de trabajo/estudio ojalá ilustrara a la comunidad cómo funciona una junta directiva.

 

Como miembro de la junta directiva he asistido a talleres y conferencias para obtener conocimientos que me convertirían en mejor miembro de la junta. También he votado para que maestros y administradores pudieran asistir a talleres y conferencias. Cuanto más conocimientos y aptitudes podemos obtener, tanto mejor podremos educar a nuestros alumnos.
