I have spent the last twenty-three years volunteering for the children of the Tucson Unified School District. I became involved with the school district as a parent volunteer when my son entered kindergarten in 1985. I spent eleven years helping teachers in their classrooms. I spent many years in leadership positions with parent organizations such as PTA and TUSD’s School Community Partnership Council.

I was an instrumental part of various district wide committees concerning boundaries, magnet schools, desegregation, student discipline and school councils.

Tucson Unified is at an exciting crossroad of change. We have a new superintendent who has a vision for the future and is not mired in our past mistakes.

In my eight years on the Board I have been an outspoken advocate for students. This term would allow me to help the new superintendent usher in a new age of openness, fiscal responsibility and a focus on real student achievement.

I feel it has been a privilege to have been your voice on the Governing Board for my last two terms. With this term I believe we can become the great school system that we once were. I know where we have been and know where we need to go and am ready, willing and able to do the hard work that needs to be done to accomplish this task.
 
 He pasado los últimos veintitrés años haciendo trabajos voluntarios por los niños del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Tucson. Me involucré con el distrito escolar como madre que hacía trabajos voluntarios cuando mi hijo entró al preescolar en 1985. Pasé once años ayudando a los maestros en las aulas. También estuve muchos años en posiciones de liderazgo de organizaciones de padres, tales como la Asociación de Padres y Maestros (siglas en inglés PTA) y el Consejo de Sociedades de la Comunidad con las Escuelas (School Community Partnership Council en inglés) del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Tucson.

Tuve un papel importante en varios comités de todo el distrito que abordaron los límites del distrito, escuelas especializadas, desegregación, disciplina de alumnos y consejos escolares.

El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Tucson está en un momento interesante de cambio. Tenemos un superintendente nuevo que tiene una visión para el futuro y que no se ha quedado estancado en los errores del pasado.

Durante mis ocho años en la Junta he sido un representante abierto de los alumnos. Este periodo me permitiría ayudar al superintendente nuevo a comenzar una época nueva de abertura, responsabilidad fiscal y concentración en logros reales de los alumnos.

Para mí ha sido un privilegio haber servido como su voz en la Junta Directiva durante los últimos dos periodos. En este periodo creo que podemos convertirnos en el gran distrito escolar que éramos antes. Sé donde hemos estado y a donde tenemos que ir y estoy preparada, dispuesta y capaz de hacer el trabajo duro que hay que hacer para lograr esta meta.
